Auch is the old capital of Gascogne. It has about 25000 inhabitants. It's most famous citizen was Charles de Batz; known to the world as D'Artagnan, one of the Musketeers.

  • Place Salinis where the statue of D'Artagnan is located at the top of a long stairway

  • Tour de Armagnac Great tower dated to XIV century

  • Cathedral of Saint Marie Build during XV century. Magnificent organs.

Around Auch there are several chateaux (de Montegut, de Saint-Cricq, du Rieutort a Roquelaure), aristocratic residence of Du Barry and a pleasant benedictine church in Pessan.

Not far from Auch (about 20 km) lies the pretty village of Bassoues. Its 500 or so villagers are proud of their Donjon from XIV century, a century old Basilica Saint-Fris and an old market where trading still continues.
